Glitter fabics

There are a lot of glitter fabrics and clothes out this season. A lot of pieces are embellished with lettering.

Summer shirts are quick to sew and easy to embellish.

Using LAMIFIX

LAMIFIX is an iron-on lamination by Vlieseline/Freudenberg. Fabrics become water repellent using this coat.

The description sounds nice and easy but since I have heard about different problems using this lamination I wanted to try it myself

There is a ‘mat’  film, which kind of damps down the colours and a glossy on that looks more like plastic but brightens up the colours. I used the glossy one, the technique is the same.

Lamifix Verarbeitung, Freudenberg, farbenmix.de

This is how it works:

- absolutely iron on as described, using middle heat , bubbles can be ironed again

- iron-on to fix the lamination and then cut

- instead of 8 secs better iron on the coat for 10 seconds

- let it cool for at least 10 hours

After cooling you can cut the fabric as usual using a cutter or scissors. It doesn’t fray and you don’t need a special presser foot. Pins will leave little holes so you better fix the fabric with STYLEFIX.You can easily embroider the fabric if you use the adhesive card web. If you embroider or patch the fabric prior to laminating it will get little gaps that are not coated.

You should’t do patterns that need to be turned over since the coated fabric can easily get wrinkled and bubbly. So that leaves only a few patterns like this toilet bag since you don’t have to turn them over. Leave the seams on the outside and bind them with bias tape.

I wouldn’t use it for big bags or wallets you use every day.

But the material is great for nice placemats. or to freshen up felt coasters. Two circles sewn together left on left make a great coaster. Or use it for book covers and little bags.

Beginners or impatient seamstresses should use precoated fabrics. Same when you want to sell your products. But if you are a patient crafter I am sure you can realize a lot of different ideas.

If you have gotten too much respect now just try some coasters for a start  – and remember: These are just my personal opinion and tips :-)
